LUTHERSTADT WITTENBERG

Station Lutherstadt Wittenberg, on the way from Berlin to Leipzig

All Saints Church (Castle Church)

The tower of Castle Church or Schloss Kirche (88 meter hight)

It now is a bronze door embossed with the test of the theses

Of interest, too, are the home of Luther, now a museum; the houses of Melanchthon and of the German painter and etcher Lucas Cranach the Elder; and the parish church, dating from the 14th century, where Luther preached. Luther, Melanchthon, and the German religious reformer Johann Bugenhagen were all faculty members of the University of Wittenberg (1502), which was merged with the University of Halle in 1817. The spot where Luther burned the papal bull condemning his doctrines is marked by an oak tree.

The city was cited as early as 1180 and served (1273-1422) as the capital of the duchy of Saxe-Wittenberg. The house of Wettin obtained control of the city in 1423. It passed to the Albertine line of the Wettin house in 1547 under the terms of the treaty known as the Capitulation of Wittenberg. Meanwhile, the city had become the focal point of the Reformation. In 1534 the first Lutheran Bible was printed here.

Town Square Wittenberg

The city sustained heavy damage in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and in the Seven Years' War. Wittenberg, following the deliberations at the Congress of Vienna, was annexed by Prussia in 1815. Population (1992 estimate) 48,400 people.

Luther continued to celebrate three of the great Marian festivals-Purification, Annunciation, and Visitation. He also continued to use the Ave Maria prayer; that is, the first part of it: "Hail Mary, full of grace, blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb." The latter part, "Pray for us sinners in the hour of our death," actually came later, added by the Carthusians after the Reformation. All the Reformers, even the relatively radical Zwingli, continued to say the first part of the Ave Maria. Of course, they did not say it as a prayer to Mary-they made that very clear-but as an acknowledgement of the fact that God's grace was so manifest in the virginal conception and her giving birth to Jesus.

Seminari Martin Luther, di sini 1534 dicetak pertama kalinya Kitab Perjanjian Baru dalam bahasa Jerman

Also, Mary is prominent in some of the hymns that come from the Lutheran Reformation. And if you take it to the next century, obviously this continued with, for example, Bach's Magnificat and so forth surrounding both the Advent of Christ and also Mary at the cross. So in worship, in liturgy, in theology, despite the Reformers' critique, Mary continued to have a prominent place for early Protestants-I think an appropriately prominent place.
